Serge Patient
23 mars 1935 - 19 janvier 2021

Picture by Kathleen GYSSELS, Antwerp University.

Born on March 23, 1935 in Cayenne, Serge Patient studied in France, like many other Guyanese, before returning to the country to work as a Spanish teacher at the Lycée Félix Eboué in Cayenne. Subsequently, he was principal of the Monnerville high school in Kourou.

Patient was a member of the U.P.G (Guyanese People's Union) and was general councilor of Guyana and deputy mayor of the municipality of Kourou until 1995.

In his re-edited novel, Le Nègre du Gouverneur, fairly classic, Serge Patient recreates the colonial atmosphere, with nods to Une Tempête ("Caliban's duty" in front of his master, Prospero) and to Othello by Shakespeare (love impossible since forbidden between white Virginia and her "dark", D'Chimbo). This intertextual constellation branches out to become the crux of the plot, the seed of rebellion and imbalance in the "colonial order" (see the excerpts accompanying this Island Hopping Report). Patient, as authors from the Caribbean diaspora (Caryl Phillips in The Nature of Blood, 1997, Surinamese Cynthia McLeod in De Vrije Negerin Elisabeth, 2000) explicitly refer to Desdemona and Othello, both the forbidden love between the slave and the mistress was the object of opprobrium and undermined the power of the white man.

Serge Patient passed away on January 19, 2021 at the age of 85. In his homage, Tchisséka Lobelt writes, “On the literary level, Serge Patient is a great figure whose prestige is without measure in Guyana. If he has published only one novel, Le Nègre du Gouverneur, it is above all these poetic works that are known throughout Guyana to tell the whole story and Le mal du pays. Guyana is at the center of Serge Patient's poetic work; it comes back obsessively. In his Anthology of French-speaking Guyanese poetry (2010), René Gnalega indicates ‘the poet's spirit is haunted by Guyana. Thus the question of identity is constantly reaffirmed, the poet puts the Guyanese at grips with his own history and his future ". Patient is also the expression of Creole. An essential work to enter into Guyanese poetry, themes return marooning, Guyanese identity, negritude and the universalist quest".

As he passed away, several artists, students, writers and friends gathered for a wake. In the presence of former minister Christiane Taubira, the evening was a happening in the Creole style: on Wednesday March 11, 2020, a portrait of Serge Patient was rendered, as part of the “Rendez-vous du Cinéma”, offered by the EPCC les Trois-Flués and the Territorial Collectivity of Guyana.

On this occasion, the ENCRE audience was able to discover or rediscover the documentary "Light on Serge Patient", the result of a partnership between the Territorial Collectivity of Guyana and Guyana la 1ère, produced by Luc Germain of “Tic Tac Production”. This twenty-six minute portrait devoted to this great man of letters from Mana and Cayenne, the former mayor of Kourou, also known for his political commitment, offered the audience a sincere tribute, in presence of Serge Patient’s family: Evelyne Patient, his wife and children, including Isabelle Patient, vice-president of the CTG, as well as Georges Patient, senator.
Also present at this tribute were Mr. and Mrs. Alexandre, Christiane Taubira, Rolande Chalco-Lefay, Vice-President of the CTG and many other personalities.

Having lived in Teheran, Auckland, Kisangani, Serge Patient was also a close friend to Leon Damas and to André Schwarz-Bart (see ile.en.ile) whom he had offered his hospitality at several occasions. Both writers were indebted to the generosity of Patient; the last time I had the pleasure to talk to him was at the International Conference for the Centennial Year of Leon Damas’ birth in Cayenne, organized by myself in partnership with the UAG. At that occasion, Serge Patient stressed the legacy of former député de l’outre-mer: fraternity. It is this quality that will eternally mark the humble and honest man, for eternity.
